A Letter From Your Calling

A LETTER FROM YOUR CALLING

Editor’s Note: This is a contribution by Tara Sophia Mohr

Via Tiny Buddha

“Every calling is great when greatly pursued.” ~Oliver Wendell Holmes

It’s me. The one who keeps talking to you about that thing. That project. That possibility.

I know you think you couldn’t be the one for the job, but honestly, if you weren’t the one for the job, I wouldn’t have come to you with it.

I wouldn’t have come knocking at the door of your mind. I wouldn’t have come into your dreams, into your imagination, into your heart.

I wouldn’t have made it so compelling to think about me.

I wouldn’t have planted in you the frustration with what is.

I wouldn’t have planted in you the vision of what could be.

You say you want more meaning, more adventure, and to have a greater impact.

I’m offering you all of that, but you keep telling me I’m silly, unrealistic, too big, when here I am, ready to give you the greatest adventure of your life.

I don’t take it personally, but I do weep about it.

I weep for the joy you are missing out on. I weep because you aren’t getting to witness your immense strength and brilliance. I weep for what the world is missing out on too.

When I took this job, they told me much of it would be waiting. Waiting on you.

I want to make sure you know, I’m here, close as breath, waiting. I’m waiting for you to say yes.

We can do this. Together, we can do this thing.

It’s true, part of my job is creating challenges and dark moments along the way—but only enough of them to teach you the most beautiful lessons you’ll ever learn.

I need you. Your hands. Your heart. Your mind. Your circumstances. Your strengths. Yourweaknesses. Your wounds. Your wit. Your tale.

I need you, just as you are.

Say yes?

Love,

Your Calling

On the 130th anniversary of the founding of Banco Sabadell we wanted to pay homage to our city by means of the campaign “Som Sabadell” (We are Sabadell) . This is the flashmob that we arranged as a final culmination with the participation of 100 people from the Vallès Symphony Orchestra, the Lieder, Amics de l’Òpera and Coral Belles Arts choirs.

In Memory of Kit II

This black, beautiful

wide-eyed male cat

was

demanding like a child

was

delicately affectionate, so strong

to touch my heart.

He would lie near warmth

near me

stretched out in relaxation

and at times gently

lift his paw touching my shoulder

as if to say

I am here, I love you

and smile

his smile was of an eternal, lasting kind

which will remain with me until I go. 28.May 2012

Overview: Dove Project Session 1 (27/06/2012)

28 Jun

Well, we’re off the ground! And what I got from this session was just what a multi-faceted play ‘The Dove’  is; and how much steady work we are going to have to put in to bring its complexity  to light in our project.

We had a good old go at an improvisation before an overall read- through. The idea being that the improvisation could provide us with a platform from which  to attempt to engage with the ‘energies’ of the characters before an actual textual read-through. This sort of worked (great characterisation by Amelia, Vera, and the good old (or should I say young deer) Dove), but as was pointed out to me, it was quite difficult to do the characterisations and energies justice when none of us have really got to grips with the characters as yet. This led on to a straight read-through immediately in order to address this fact.

The read through went really well- for a first- time reading of all the parts. Everybody really caught the flavour of their characters, and I can see how everything will develop. The read-through raised lots of thematic issues, and we’re going to have to spend a lot of time going through the text in micro so we can work out all the nuances and develop a rich, challenging piece that can resonate through into the now. A lot of what we had to talk about was connected to questioning the exact nature of  The Dove. Is she a manifestation of Amelia and Vera? Do we play her modern? Lots of points of ambiguity were found in the text which we will be making decisions about as we go along.

I also unveiled (if that is the right word), my first attempt at creating a film which could act as an example and embody the feeling of the type of audio/visual piece I had mind for The Dove Project. Cobbled out of bits of a recording of a short story and a few video clips film in the Country Park came  ‘Harvey Was Heavy’. I tried to pack in as many techniques as I could to see what I could do with the software and overall it was successful, but there was no real clear development in the piece, which their will be in The Dove Project.  But it was a good experiment, and I was in flow whilst doing it- which was fabulous! I’ll put a little snippet of the film up shortly…

I shall put my calendar- head on and plump for a date in July for the next Dove Session, and then we can see if it suits-adjusting accordingly. It was also agreed that unless otherwise stated ArtiPeeps Sessions would always take place on the last/4th Wednesday of the Month.

I so much appreciated all the concentration, energy and input of all the Peeps at the session. THANK YOU!

Hysteria and ‘The Dove’…Things to Ponder Over..

26 Jun

Some ideas to contemplate in terms of characterisation…..The two female protagonists (Vera and Amelia) in Djuna Barnes’ ‘‘The Dove’ could be seen as diverse representations of the late Victorian notion of Hysteria. They can be seen as two diversely affected women.

Is Amelia an example of the later 2 phases of hysteria?

Freud’s stages of hysteria are as follows:

1. The Aura

2. the attack properly speaking (with screaming, pallor, loss of consciousness and muscular regidity)

3. the chronic or clownish stage (large movements, contortions, and theatrical gesture, imitating the expression of grand passion. Amelia?

4. the final phase of resolution (sobbing, tears and laughter).

And is Vera the victim of psychically acquired hysteria?

Here’s a quote from Freud and is observation of a case study called Anna:

‘This girl who was bubbling over with intellectual vitality, led an extremely monotonous existence in her puritanically minded family. She embellished her life in a manner probably influenced her decisively in the direction of her illness, by indulging in systematic day-dreaming. While everyone thought she was attending, she was living her life through fairy tales in her imagination

Here’s an interesting video by a technology historian on the Big Think Website…A Really good, humorous background overview

And here’s another link to a website which gives you a feel for the history behind hysteria

Also Wikipedia: Hysteria

Also here’s the link to some information on Spiritualism, which is directly linked to the Amelia/Dove Relationship and underpins the play considerably.

Session 8 Catch-Up: A Slice Of Watermelon and a Thoughtful Discussion

21 Jun

Another really creative and thoughtful session. The 100 Questions exercise was really worth doing: exposing our areas of growth and where meaning lies for each other. I found it particularly revealing considering I had done the same exercise over a year ago and so much has occured between now and then. It was an excellent way to check in and see how far I had come. It’s one to repeat I think. The exercise also initiated a really excellent discussion on issues such as what happens after death; how can I contribute, move away from myself; and how do you deal with growing old….challenging and revealing stuff- all articulated sensitively and with warmth.

The creative expression of our findings were also really interesting and part of my piece had the following poem attached to it encased in a box/cage:

NO LONGER DO I HAVE TO BE SOMETHING I AM NOT STRETCHING OUT LIKE A BRANCH I REALISE I AM PART OF SOMETHING MUCH BIGGER THAN MYSELF THE BRANCH CONNECTS TO OTHER BRANCHES AND TAKES ME BEYOND MYSELF LIKE A RIPPLE I UNFURL THROUGH WIND AND RAIN WITH HOPE AND GRATITUDE YOU ARE JUST AS MUCH PART OF THIS AS I I REACH OUT TO YOU AND OPEN MY ARMS TO YOU YOU WHO ARE ME AND ME WHO ARE YOU I AM
