Becoming Tree

by Richard Biddle

.

as the labyrinthine brain shreds into a maze of mutations
and unburdens itself of language
as the gnashing teeth clack like glockenspiel blocks
and varnished nails vanish in a panic of burnished light;

imagine no-footedness, the cessation of journeying
imagine an amnesty of grateful arms gracefully
embracing the birds’ hollow bones
imagine not imagining

as the realisation of non-self engulfs this body with
molecular precision
as death’s imitation spreads its follicular canopy
above nibbling insects and spongy humus

imagine a factory, a pulp-plant manufacturing seedpods
imagine a container, a casket for nascent fungi
a treasury of lumber
imagine an artificial jungle

then see that this is the place where ivy climbs
it’s lost patterns
where frond, stalk and needle, sap strength
from Rain’s plummeting vitality

where fingerless stumps leaf through
Sun’s, illuminated manuscript

and where Wind, emboldened and deathless,
voices its enduring testament
to this beatific
synthesis

in dreams

by Kate Garrett

if I can only
hold the you with blurred edges,
the world a vignette
photograph at the moon’s rise,
then it’s enough. I’ll take it.

to Iphis

by Kate Garrett

angles interrupt
the flow between our curves; leave
her body perfect.
I would kiss her soft lips as
they are, entwine our limbs, hearts.

Lotis

by James Knight

..

.......Lotis

1

A voice
     scratches
           her
           ear:

        .Come
    here,
       petal.

Later:
           a red stain.

She doesn't cry.
She washes the sheets
           and does the dishes.

........2

The back door opens
onto a blank night.

A gull shrieks like Mr Punch.

Her blood is daughter
to the sea.

.

A parting gift

by Rebecca Audra Smith

.

Nessus, what a dartboard for love you were;
first it’s sweetness, then it’s poison.
Practical, to use your wounded blood,
turn it to revenge-heavy love token:

Here, Deianira, who sets men’s hearts
quaking with love, accept my dying gift
of bloodied shirt, it will bring forth
love-rich wishes for the giver of….

What a foolish woman to believe
a blood soaked garment was inducement
to love, or perhaps not so foolish
as in keeping with our days

where love and poison meet and mold
our human bodies to their joint taste.

.
Byblis writes a love letter.

Heart like a deer
You leap and bound away from me
You nibble at the edges of my mind
You timidly stalk my desire.
What a jittery animal you are
to start and flee at love’s knock.

I will tether you to paper
I will offer you a bouquet of words;
such lush, beauteous words,
it is a feast of silver birches
for your deer antlers to scrape,
strip the soft coating of growth
and emerge, sharp edged, weapons-
I will need every tier for this fight.

.
Byblis is rejected

So, I threw myself at his head
Lay naked on his bed waiting his arrival
Surprise! He slammed the door.

So, my letter wasn’t even properly read
but thrown onto the floor in disgust.
The messenger chose the wrong moment.

So, my name a byword for shame
The girl who fell in love with her twin
What incest? What unnatural?

So, a woman cannot fight her dreams
Society, laws, taboo, these things
are not sacred when it comes to love.

So, I cried myself into a fountain
The nymphs didn’t know that I was crying
over the sweetness of his face, still curving
in the shape of my own.

Flip Side

by Sadaf Fatima

.

The blood cloak you thought

Would incite romance,

Took Hercules away.

Remember, love isn’t just delight

It‘s also destruction.

It’s not just a beginning,

But can also be an end.

The ills may or may not

Lie with you,

Or the person you love,

But the rumors,

Real or false,

Bring you to a sad end.

But don’t despair,

As love comes without warning,

And even goes without a hint.

Don’t despair as you two,

Aren’t the only ones,

Fate’s the third to decide,

For a happily ever after,

Or an ever after,

Without each other.

Love that incites romance

Also burns it down.

.

Love Transcends

(Iphis and Ianthe)

by Carol Robson

A raging fire burned
loves flames kindled
elicited by your beauty
innocence in despair
knowing this love
betrothed in ignorance
by a loving father
unaware of deceit
by a loving mother
accepting the truth
of the prophecy of Isis.

.
The Gods frowning
a Sapphic love
not yet countenanced
there should not be
girl with girl.
My desires
my beautiful Ianthe
that you be man
or even I
to consummate
to bring purity
for our love desires.

.
True love triumphs
above all foolishness
love is much more
than decreeing
the genders
of who has
madness to love
or to lie with
their desired bride.

.
Decreed by Isis
our troth fulfilled
I’m now man
rendered by Goddess
for satisfaction
of the Gods
and families.
Yet! my beautiful Ianthe
our love transcends
Gods, Goddess and Gender.
